How to apply for ALCS Prizes
The Association for Low Countries Studies in Great Britain and Ireland awards yearly Prizes to the best Undergraduate Essay, Undergraduate Dissertation and postgraduate Article written in any area of Low Countries studies.
Applications from non-members are also welcome.
The closing date for submissions is 15 June in each year.
Award categories
Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
Undergraduate Essay
Open to all undergraduate students currently registered in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Entries may be written in English or Dutch, and should not exceed 3,000 words, including references, footnotes, tables and appendices.
Undergraduate Dissertation
Open to all undergraduate students currently registered in the UK and the Republic of Ireland. Entries may be written in English or Dutch. Dissertations should not exceed 10,000 words, including references, footnotes, tables and appendices.
Postgraduate and Early Career researchers
Open to all postgraduates currently registered in the UK and the Republic of Ireland, and to scholars resident in the UK or Ireland who have received their PhD or equivalent qualification within the last five years. Entries may be written in English or Dutch, and should not exceed 8,000 words, including references, footnotes, tables and appendices.
Members of the Executive Committee of the Association may not apply.
The prize
For each category the prize is £100. Winners will feature in the ALCS Bulletinand may also have the opportunity to publish their winning essay in the ALCS journal Dutch Crossing.
Other essays submitted may also be published where appropriate. The prize will not be awarded if none of the submitted essays are deemed to be suitable for publication.
The prize will be awarded by the Executive Committee on the recommendation of a Prize Committee drawn from its members.
To enter, send your essay in electronic form (Word or PDF) to alcs@sheffield.ac.uk and to the ALCS Secretary. Please make sure to include your name, university affiliation, essay title, contact details and the category you're entering.

The Committee’s decision will be final. All entrants will receive notification of the outcome by the end of July of the same year.
