Call for Applications: ALCS Postgraduate Award

Academic Year: From Entry 2026

Scope: Open to candidates who want to pursue MA-level study or research at a UK-HE institution. Your MA will be in Dutch Language, Literature, History, Art History, Post-Colonial Studies, Politics, or Translation Studies with a clear connection with the culture, history and language of the Netherlands and Flanders/Belgium, or Suriname, Antilles.

Overview

The Association for Low Countries Studies (ALCS) is pleased to announce a call for applications from postgraduate scholars committed to exploring the Dutch-speaking world in all its complexity. We are looking for candidates who demonstrate a keen intellectual curiosity and a thoughtful engagement with the Low Countries’ cultural and historical influence.

Whether your scholarly focus lies in the legacies of the Dutch colonial empire, the "Polder Model" of governance, Rubens or Rembrandt, or the practice and theory of Translation Studies, we invite you to apply. 

This grant aims  to support talented scholars who demonstrate an ability to connect Dutch themes to broader global conversations.

Funding Details

• Award Amount: £ 1,500 (to be used for tuition, research travel, or living expenses).
• Duration: One academic year.

Eligibility

• Enrolled in (or accepted to) an MA program with a clear focus on Dutch Studies.
• Proven academic excellence in previous undergraduate studies.
• A brief academic reference or statement of support.
• (for research MA only) A research proposal that contributes new insights to the field.
